Political Context, Seat Bargaining & Legislative Impact (1996)

In 1996, Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa forged an alliance with P.V. Narasimha Rao's Congress party. The alliance suffered a catastrophic defeat amidst intense corruption allegations and the split of Congress by Moopanar to form TMC. The AIADMK won only 4 seats while Congress drew a complete blank. Jayalalithaa herself was defeated in Bargur by DMK's E. G. Sugavanam.
