Alliance Dynamics: Pre-Election Ballot vs. Post-Election Floor Strength (2006)
In the 2006 Assembly Election, DMK contested as part of the Democratic Progressive Alliance (DPA) pre-poll. Post-election, DMK won 96 seats (short of the 118 majority mark by 22 seats). Rather than a formal coalition ministry, DMK formed Tamil Nadu's first minority government supported from outside by the Indian National Congress (34 seats), PMK (18 seats), and Left parties without any allied MLAs joining the Council of Ministers.
