Political Evolution & Electoral History
DMK created historical milestones by becoming the first regional party in post-independence India to defeat the Congress party in a state election in 1967, installing Annadurai as Chief Minister. Under the five-decade stewardship of M. Karunanidhi and subsequently M. K. Stalin, the DMK institutionalized affirmative action, pioneering 69% reservation, the First-Generation Graduate scholarship, the breakfast scheme for primary schools, and free bus transit for women.
In the 2026 Assembly election, the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance transitioned to the role of Principal Opposition with Udhayanidhi Stalin serving as Leader of the Opposition.
