Political Context, Seat Bargaining & Legislative Impact (1980)
Following the dismissal of MGR's government by the Indira Gandhi central cabinet in February 1980, DMK entered into a direct 50-50 seat-sharing pact with Indira Gandhi's Congress. Despite polling a high 44.40% vote share, the alliance was vanquished by public anger against the unjust dismissal of MGR's elected government. MGR's AIADMK-Left front swept 149 seats. DMK won 37 seats and Congress won 31 seats, with Karunanidhi becoming Leader of Opposition.
