Political Context, Seat Bargaining & Legislative Impact (2011)
The 2011 election proved disastrous for the incumbent DMK-led DPA government. Reeling under intense national media coverage of the 2G spectrum allocation controversy and severe anti-incumbency, DMK allotted 63 seats to Congress, 30 to PMK, and 10 to VCK. The AIADMK-DMDK-Left mega-coalition swept the state with 203 seats. DMK won only 23 seats and Congress won 5 seats, while Captain Vijayakanth's DMDK secured 29 seats to become the Official Opposition party in the Assembly.
