Political Context, Seat Bargaining & Legislative Impact (1984)
The December 1984 election was held simultaneously with the Lok Sabha polls following the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and while Chief Minister M. G. Ramachandran was undergoing medical treatment at Brooklyn Hospital, New York. A twin wave of sympathy for Indira Gandhi and concern for MGR's recovery propelled the AIADMK-Congress alliance to a landslide with 193 seats. The DMK-Left alliance was restricted to 34 seats, with DMK winning 24.
