Political Genesis, Formation & Assembly Dynamics

The modern coalition framework dates back to 2004 when M. Karunanidhi united DMK, Congress, PMK, MDMK, Left parties, and IUML into the Democratic Progressive Alliance (DPA), scoring a clean sweep of all 40 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The alliance governed Tamil Nadu from 2006 to 2011 as a minority government with outside Congress support. Rebranded as the Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA) for the 2019 Lok Sabha and 2021 Assembly elections, the front scored landslide victories, returning M. K. Stalin as Chief Minister with 159 seats.
